The Story of Mr. Hartle

Inspired by true events.

The story starts in the 1950's in a small Minnesota community. (New Ulm, MN) Dutch Hartle was a local business man. He was known for owning the local Ford dealership and for years was a successful and influential member of the community. Mr Hartle seemingly had it all. He had beautiful wife, family and large victorian home in the center of town.

However, Mr. Hartle also had a dark side. He was known as a compulsive gambler and alcoholic. The basement of his home consisted of slot machines game tables and a full bar. This is where Dutch would throw parties and spend countless nights smoking, drinking and gambling with his friends.

During the 1950's he ended up loosing a substantial sum of money through his car dealership and other business affairs. This led him deeper into alcoholism and depression. One fateful night he went into the basement with a loaded shotgun, walked to the corner of the game room and killed himself.

After his suicide his wife never went in the basement again. She proceeded to shove 5 butter knives in the basement door and only maintenance people were allowed. His wife remained in the home, widowed, for another 40 years.

A NOTE FROM LANTZ

My father purchased the house in the late 90's. When he first approached the basement door there were 5 knives shoved into the crevasse sealing the door. After removing the knives he went down into the basement. The game room was full of cobwebs and dusty slot machines. He described it as walking into a time warp. Upon further exploration he discovered the shot gun pellets were still in the wall from when Dutch Hartle shot himself.

I had always found the story of Mr. Hartle quite intriguing and wanted to pursue writing about it. Our first album was primarily love songs and leaned on the rock/pop genre. I wanted this record to have much darker overtones. It needed to be about something heavy and real. I felt the music should convey raw emotion while painting a story in the listeners mind. In the beginning of 2009 we began writing what would eventually be known as The Mr. Hartle Sessions.

When the question of how and where to record came up, we had the idea of converting the "Hartle" basement into a recording studio. In the summer of 2009 we started building a studio in the very basement in which the bullet holes reside. The bullet hole area was converted into a live room in which the album was recorded. In November of that same year we officially began recording the Mr. Hartle Sessions. Nine months later we were done tracking the record. The album was then sent to local engineer/producer Luke Fredrickson for Mixing and Mastering.

Recording in that basement was an experience that is hard to describe. I'm not a huge believer in ghosts. That being said, there were nights in which felt like the air was filled with a strange haunting energy. I think that energy transferred to the music creating a powerful and haunting album.
